Yesterday, I came across this monument made out of litter found in a beach in Ayvalık/Türkiye. This is the true representation of what is littered in the sand. You can see all the cigarette butts, bottle caps, soda cans, and many other litter items. Many thanks to @ayvalikbelediyesi for reminding us not to litter and protect our environment.

Polyethylene may be metabolized by waxworms owing to bacteria in their intestines.

Researchers discovered more "microbial abundance" in the caterpillars' stomachs when they ingested plastic than when they ate a regular honeycomb diet.

"Superworms are like mini recycling plants, shredding the polystyrene with their mouths and then feeding it to the bacteria in their gut," Dr Chris Rinke said.

It's still not certain if waxworms can be used to eradicate plastic pollution, however, the researchers have hope that waxworms can contribute to the recycling process and the environment.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon outlined the goals that would lead his second five-year tenure, including expanding energy access to battle endemic poverty. Universal access to energy, increased efficiency, and increased deployment of renewable sources are lofty goals, and the Secretary-General is working to make them a reality through the Sustainable Energy for All program.

Sustainable Energy for All will draw worldwide attention to the necessity of energy for development and poverty reduction. The goal is to achieve three objectives by 2030:

• achieving universal access to modern energy services

• double the pace of development in energy efficiency

• increasing the amount of renewable energy in the global energy mix.

According to an article by The Guardian, microplastics have been found in living people's lungs for the first time.

“We did not expect to find the highest number of particles in the lower regions of the lungs, or particles of the sizes we found. It is surprising as the airways are smaller in the lower parts of the lungs and we would have expected particles of these sizes to be filtered out or trapped before getting this deep." told Laura Sadofsky, a senior author of the research from Hull York Medical School in the United Kingdom.

According to a BBC article written by Helen Briggs, researches say that the Amazon rainforest is moving towards a "tipping point" where trees may die off en masse. The Amazon which contains between 90 and 140 billion metric tons of carbon could lose its capability of absorbing carbon.

There are signs of a loss of resilience in more than 75% of the forest, with trees taking longer to recover from the effects of droughts largely driven by climate change as well as human impacts such as deforestation and fires.

Groundwater is being over-used in many areas, where more water is abstracted from aquifers than is recharged by rain and snow.

Groundwater pollution is a particular problem that can take decades or even centuries to recover from.

In some places, we do not know how much groundwater lies beneath our feet, which means we could be failing to harness a potentially vital water resource.

Exploring, protecting and sustainably using groundwater will be central to surviving and adapting to climate change and meeting the needs of a growing population.

We must protect groundwater from pollution and use it sustainably, balancing the needs of people and the planet. Groundwater’s vital role in water and sanitation systems, agriculture, industry, ecosystems and climate change adaptation must be reflected in sustainable development policymaking. According to the agency’s Global analysis of healthcare waste in the context of COVID-19: status, impacts and recommendations, the mainly plastic trashthreatens human and environmental health, and exposes a dire need to improve waste management practices. As the UN and countries grappled with the immediate task of securing and quality-assuring supplies of PPE, less attention and resources were devoted to the safe and sustainable management of this waste. 

For the Executive Director of WHO’s Health Emergencies Programme, Dr Michael Ryan, this type of protection is vital, “but it is also vital to ensure that it can be used safely without impacting on the surrounding environment.” 

For WHO, the health crisis also offers an opportunity to develop strong national policies and regulations, change behaviours, and increase budgets.
